PVA on canvas

122.00 x 92.00

Artists stamp l.r. and signed, titled and inscribed Peter Upward / Saggitarius with Jupiter / Rowan Gallery on reverse

Provenance:

The Peter Upward Estate

Exhibited:

Probably Paintings by Peter Upward, Rowan Gallery, London, 1962 (or in his second show in 1964)

Note:

Peter Upwards interest in astrology began in London, after his move from Sydney in 1962. By the late 1960's the typical Horoscope paintings had emerged using high key colour and relatively static forms; equally importantly they were often titled after the human subject, whose astrological chart was attached to the back of the painting - the best known example being William Blake which he entered into the Blake Prize in 1965. Others in the series were of a more general astrological theme of which Sagittarius with Jupiter can be sees as a typical example, given the absence of an individual subject and, on the pictorial side, the low chromatic contrast and the persistence of his characteristically sweeping brushwork.
