Terence Maloon, Freehand - Recent Works by Ann Thomson, Exhibition Catalogue, Drill Hall Gallery, Canberra, 2015, illus p. 38:
“…the subtlety and skill of Thomson’s art consists of obtaining the maximum integration of parts while avoiding gridlock… dribbling trails are foils that accentuate the brush marks’ venturesome, airborne character. Through their clustering and overlapping, and through spatial suggestions arising from relationships of colour and tone, tracks of the brush are transformed into a series of planes that shuffle into a precisely conceived aerial perspective (or, alternatively, into several variants of perspective), yet the spatial illusion – vivid and compelling though it is – is fleeting and reversible.” (Maloon, op. cit., p. 20)
