Provenance: Probably Joseph Brown Gallery, c. 1970; Private Collection, Sydney, till 2015
Note: The Earth’s polar areas can be thought of as the planet’s air conditioning system, regulating global temperature. As these regions begin to warm, the ocean currents that distribute heat around the world are beginning to shift. This has resulted in record breaking changes in temperature, sea ice extent and atmospheric circulation. In the winter of 2018-2019, the Arctic circle saw record low sea ice extent and above average temperatures. Conditions in the Bering Sea, which lies between Alaska and Russia, shocked scientists as the changes in ocean observations projected by climate models were not expected until around 2050. Dr Joelle Gergis, April 2019 Our thanks to the artist for assistance in cataloguing this work.
