Stone Progression - West, 1969

Enquire

acrylic on board

60.00 x 120.00

signed and dated 'Rankin / 69' l.r.

Provenance:

The Artist, c. 1969: Private Collection, Adelaide, since then

Note:

Artist's note, 2018:
The “stone progression” is the mix of images of stones, that was my way of dismantling and reassembling landscape images in a physical and spiritual sense. And “west” was both my literal journey west to live and work in NW NSW around Bourke at the time as well as a metaphorical link to the Chan Buddhists of China’s dream to travel for religious enlightenment in the land of Buddha. So “west” was both literal and mystical. Another element of the painting is the buried background grid that is a homage to both Cezanne and Mondrian. And the white overpainting was to create a sense of time and distance, a separating film, memory.
