Dick Watkins: Paintings 1993-1996, Martin Browne Fine Art, Sydney, 1996, no. 13

Note:

Dick Watkins is unusual in his willingness to explore unexpected genres. In 1983 he caused a stir with a suite of paintings of the human figure which, whilst not universally admired, nevertheless formed the core of his contribution to the São Paolo Biennale that year. A similar response greeted his 1996 exhibition of a series of landscapes at Martin Browne in Sydney, of which this work is an example. They were two-edged; at one level, they’re classic cases of postmodern irony in that they remind one of illustrations we might find in travel advertisements, and on another level they’re decidedly comfortable and picturesque landscape paintings precisely because he has painted the idea or notion of what a landscape should look like, regardless of whether it actually exists. He has selected a view that he knows will charm us precisely because a view of an attractive French village nestled on a hillside is a vision of an ideal world rather than a real one. C.N.
