Note:

The final, or finished, version of this work launched Tanner’s career. The painting was acquired from a CAS Exhibition by the Director of the National Gallery of Victoria, Daryl Lindsay, and became something of a cause celebre: the Public Service saw it as a criticism (the office was empty) and letters of complaint were sent to the papers. Decades later, the symbolism is wry enough but no more, and is characteristic of Tanner’s ironic sense of humour that he promptly turned the joke on himself — writing his own name on the office door.
As Reid writes, this was an impressive start: “his first paintings came upon us fully formed, austere and original… no lacunae, half formed fledglings, juvenilia.” But sadly the public reaction gave all the power to the message and little to the medium. “The spare elegance of drawing, the cold dry tonalities, the deliberate reticence of the painting which contrasted so strongly with much romantic and highly coloured painting of the time, were largely ignored.”
