Of works from 1973 onward, Fitzpatrick writes:
“[They] evoke a sense of movement across an expanse. Unlike the flat handling of paint and more muted approach to tone and colour used to evoke staid office or factory environments, these larger canvases provide a field upon which the artist employs a range of gestural brush strokes, a richer, more luxuriant palette, and a pulsating play of tonal contrasts. Their openness and spaciousness represent a marked contrast to the murky, insular and confined spaces of the construction and relief works of the previous decade.” op. cit. p 25
