Literature & references:

Klepac, Smith, Wach, Free & James, James Gleeson - Beyond the Screen of Sight, retrospective exhibition catalogue, National Gallery of Victoria, 2004, see p. 121, 122 and 124 for related works:
"During 1958 and for the next two years Gleeson experimented with abstraction. At the Macquarie Galleries in June 1958 he exhibited Synaptic displacement (page 124), an enigmatic array of shapes and patterns without a subject. This direction developed further after a visit in 1959 to Peggy Guggenheim in Venice, where he saw a group of early Pollocks which had an array of mystery about them. What impressed Gleeson was the element of chance and accident which seemed to be the means by which they had been created, not dissimilar to the automatic writing which Breton had advocated. Back in Australia Gleeson experimented along these lines for a short period. Although in itself he found this direction rather limiting..." (op. cit. Klepac, p. 13)
