Provenance: From the artist through Pinacotheca to Guy Stuart, 1972; through Charles Nodrum Gallery to James Baker, 1985, thence to MOCA, Brisbane; through Christies, Brisbane to Clinton Tweedie, 1996; Private Collection, Melbourne, till 2005
Exhibited: Jon Balsaitis - Metron Paintings, Pinacotheca, Melbourne, March 1972
Literature & references: Patrick McCaughey, Impact in three original works, the Age, 15 March 1972: "John Balsaitis three large paintings at Pinacotheca have the shock of originality. They excite as only the new and the ambitious can in art. At a blow they show how lazy Australian taste is, content to expatriate on past achievement rather than seek out the unfamiliar. Broadly speaking, they fall heir to the break-up of the dogmatic 60s. Lingering systematic patterns give way to more mobile, flexible surfaces. Balsaitis looks freer, less encumbered by stylistic imperatives than younger artists felt four or five years ago. The hard, bright colour of the 60s, which had its own in-built easiness now moves towards a more muted, less distinct registration. If the formats loosely paraphrase some aesthetic dogmas of the recent past, Balsaitis extraordinary colour keeps them in firm subordination. Nothing recommends these paintings more than their driving ambition not to fall for received wisdom, received colour or attitude. Balsaitis works the paintings so fully that he appears everywhere in possession of his own work. Nothing looks unconsidered and nothing looks taken over uncritically. Metron I, the finest of the three, justifies the scale superbly on just these grounds the concentration, the thoroughness and stamina of the inspiration. When he kicks the remnants of systemic patterning from his art, the more conventional moments of light and dark contrasts and gridded formats will no doubt yield to more complex structures. With these paintings Balsaitis raises expectations and asserts a level of ambition that makes stinging and stringent criticism of much that gains ready acceptance at the moment. He may be more admirable than likeable at present but there, too, his virtue exposes our vice."; Reference Geoff Burke, Metron II by Jonas Balsaities, NGV Bulletin, Jan-Feb 1973; Brain Finemore, Freedom from Prejudice, NGV, 1977, plate XXVI for Metron II;
Note: One of three large works of the same title. Metron II is in the NGV and Metron III is in the AGNSW (Gift of Michael Darling) Metron II was exhibited in Recent Australian Art, Art Gallery of NSW, Oct-Nov 1973 (curated by Frances McCarthy (Lindsay) and Daniel Thomas) This work is too large to enter the gallery safely so viewing will be by appointment.
