The Artist

Literature & references:

Richard Perry, 'Kristin Headlam: The Past is Now,' exhibition opening address, Woodbine Art, Malmsbury, 2006:
“Kristin set herself a formidable challenge: to communicate by means of her brush with the meticulously detailed, ravishingly lit, psychologically laden, and historically contextualized portraits by Goya, Manet, Van Dyke, Ingres, Velasquez. Tiepolo, Van der Weyden, and Caravaggio. Having to work quickly, given the nature of the watercolour medium, she could in no way, and in no way wished to, achieve anything like a duplication of the original. These new works thus provide a kind of improvisational riff on given themes, moving with necessary rapidity toward a transformative point where both original and simulacrum find some quirky, inventive resolution. These watercolours demonstrate most of the contemporary imperatives, among them the post-modern resistance to conventional narratives, and the simultaneous allure and distrust of the canon.

These paintings seem to me to be remarkably bold and brave, for not only do they challenge the various sly intents of portraiture - we note that in several cases the faces themselves are vacant… but they also confound our expectations of the watercolour medium itself. We may witness in the very same image both the organic process of the spreading granulation of the colour in the water on the paper (always aesthetic pleasure) and yet at the same time the flat, hard, almost brusque application of opaque black ink, which seems to declare that the artist is taking nothing for granted other than the freedom of her own self-absorbed experimentation.”
