Patrick McCaughey, We hold our own against Americans, The Age, 28 February, 1973, Powell Street Gallery exhibition review:
"The special value placed on light in Australian painting is certainly registered in Lesley Dumbrell's one woman show at the Powell Street Gallery.  Her success in generating light within the paintings accounts for the initial surprise at finding somebody still making worthwhile art out of the long abandoned syntax of "op art".  The strong optical vibrations within her paintings, which spreads the colour so that a single band registers itself less as an individual hue than as part of an overall colour mesh, are geared more to the creation of the light than the razzle dazzle of op painting.  It’s an accomplished performance in a mode which has self-evident limitations.  One limitation is that it derives so closely from cubist canons of pictorial taste – strict vertical-horizontal layouts, symmetrical designs squared to the frame – that it has few surprises.  To our eyes now, the paintings, especially their colour, are restrained to a pictorial decorum of politeness.  Ms Dumbrell emphasises those good manners by making her colour always relieve itself on grey grounds.  We are, as it were, let off the full optical consequences of her paintings by those soothing greys.”;
