Note: Australia’s outback rangelands already have a hot climate which is projected to get even hotter. Under a high greenhouse gas emissions scenario, warming may exceed 5oC, by late in the century. This means that day of 45oC will one become a day of 50oC. Heat stress affects plants and animals, just like it does humans, but without the option of air conditioning to cool down. Recent research has shown that rangeland distributions of plants and reptiles are particularly sensitive to climate change, with mammal hit harder as higher temperatures are reached. Arid zone biodiversity is also very dependent on ephemeral rainfall events like the big rains of 1974 or 2010, which have the potential to shift as the climate changes. (Climarte)
