Literature & references: The work was thought to date from the Annandale Realist period but this would appear to be wrong: another copy, previously owned by Gary Catalano, has been dated circa 1973 when he and the artist were collaborating on some prints in Sydney - before either of them moved to Melbourne. For an iconographically related painting, see Christies Australia, W.R. Burge Collection, March 2006, lot 77, for a work dated 1985. It also relates to the poster used for Mike Brown - What Now?? Heide Park and Art Gallery, 26 March - 15 May, 1983. However for reasons of provenance above, it has to be earlier than that and compositionally it covers ground he regularly traversed from the 1960s on.
