Note: In 1989 the original architects of ICI House, Bates Smart McCutcheon, invited Redpath to submit a design for a sculpture for the building’s Albert Street foyer, which they were then remodelling. Redpath returned to the concept of a ‘cloud landscape’, which she had originally developed in connection to a proposed fountain for the moat in front of the National Gallery of Victoria in 1982. The drawings for the NGV moat sculpture, titled Water and Cloud Landscape, are reproduced in Norma Redpath, Ideas and Images: Theatres of the Mind, unpublished manuscript, 1985, pp. 74-6. For the ICI commission, Redpath adapted the fountain concept to a series of bronze elements suspended from the foyer ceiling. She described it as ‘a transposition of sky imagery to a specific site’. The idea was not commissioned; the architects instead chose Inge King’s Joie de Vivre wall relief, which arguably presented fewer difficulties in terms of the free passage of people through the foyer. The present work is Redpath’s original scale model maquette that was submitted to the architects in June 1989.
