The Estate of the Artist

Note:

Herbert Cole ‘Nugget’ Coombs (1906-97) was an important and long-term supporter of Redpath’s. As first Governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia, 1960-68, he was responsible for approving the acquisition of Redpath’s Immortal Warrior, 1963-64, for the Reserve Bank in Adelaide, and commissioning Sculpture Column, 1968-72, for the foyer of the Reserve Bank in Brisbane. In 1972, when Redpath was appointed the H.C. Coombs Creative Arts Fellow at ANU, Coombs was ANU Chancellor and inaugural chair of the Australian Council for the Arts — both organisations in which he had played an instrumental role in founding. Correspondence and photographs regarding the commissioning of a portrait bust are among the Coombs correspondence file in Redpath papers, SLV, MS 15607, box 13.
