Literature & references:

A. S. & E McCulloch, the New McCulloch's Encyclopedia of Australian Art, Aus Art Editions and Meigunyah Press, 2006, illus p. 565;

Kaiser was born in Berlin, arrived in Australia in 1940 and moved to France about a decade later. He died in France in 1995 but had maintained his Australian connections in the interim. I have not seen enough of his work to make any grand statement about his achievement, but if this work (reproduced, by chance, alongside his entry in the new McCulloch's Encyclopedia of Australian Art) is anything to go on, he was seriously good. McCulloch's Australian Art Diary 2011, illus May 2nd.

Sebastian Smee, 'Paint as you really mean it', the Australian, 10 Nov 2007

"The real show-stopper is an unstretched painting on collaged canvases, one rectangle pasted over another, by Peter Kaiser. It's called From Isphahan, and its colours suggest the bleaching sun, blue sky and citrus hues of Persia as much as the title."

see also Peter Kaiser, Geelong Art Gallery, exhibition catalogue, 2007, no. 18, for a related work using the staining and collaging he developed in the 1970s. Other works in the series are in the NGV, and Gippsland Regional Galleries
