C. Dean, Frozen Gestures - the Art of Peter Upward, exhibition catalogue, Penrith Regional Gallery, 2007, p 18-19:
“Commenced in London, where he started experimenting with the use of brightly coloured resins, these new works were referred to as the ‘Circular’, ‘Disk’ or ‘Sun’ series and represent the fourth and final phase of his career… These new paintings… were widely reviewed. While interviewing Upward in 1971, Morris Lurie asked why he was producing ‘round paintings’, to which Upward simply replied ‘freedom’. Elwyn Lynn wrote an article called ‘In the Lollipop Movement’, which recognised Upward’s conceptual skill in successfully combing the gestures of abstract expressionism with the palette of pop art, while Jessica Lane wrote an elegantly titled review called ‘Peter Upward’s ‘Chi’’, which discussed the ‘energetic spirit of these pictures’.”
