Catalogue number: 6

painted steel

37.00 x 80.00 x 20.00

Provenance:

Town House Motel, Canberra, till c. 1974;
Private Collection, Melbourne, since then

Note:

In 1961 architect Dr Enrico Taglietti AO commissioned Meadmore to design decorative panels for the balcony balustrades of the Town House Motel in Canberra, as well as two sculptures for the foyer of the building which were to sit in front of wall lights - of which this work is one.  The lines of the 68 room, three storey hotel echoed those of the cruise liners of the day (they were more elegant than the 'block of flats' style favoured today) and was located on the corner of what was Childers St and today’s Barry Drive.  When the motel was sold in the mid-70s (and later demolished) the new owners donated the balustrades to the National Gallery of Australia where they have been on permanent display on a north-eastern façade since 1998.  The wall sculptures were sold, and this work was purchased by the present owner who had founded the small public company involved in the building of the Motel and had commissioned Taglietti in the first place.
