Note:

Balson's oeuvre was first seen clearly in the Heide retrospective which toured widely and was hence seen by a broad public. We were able to see the move, in the mid 50s, from the Constructive paintings, as he terms them, with their rectilinear severity, to the Non-Objective series with their organic, "all-over" complexity and brisk, fluid brushwork forming a dramatic turn into a new world; James Gleeson was impressed (Adams, op cit, p 27 and 30). In 1960, Balson made his first trip overseas and saw first-hand "...the informal abstractionists and texture painters such as Riopelle, Tapiès, Mathieu, Appel and Burri..." (Adams, p 30). This set in-train the Matter Series, so named because their central focus was on the paint itself. He poured synthetic enamels onto the boards, some of which were untouched by the artist's hand whilst others had varying degrees of "assistance" from the artist's brush, such as the above painting in which most of the yellows are final additions. They tend not to illustrate well as reproduction flattens the texture and skin that are, both literally and figuratively, the heart of the matter. In the flesh, their archaeology and topography allow the viewer - if suitably investigative - to become fascinated and entranced.
