Note:

At the turn of the 19th century Chemnitz was the centre of textile production in Continental Europe and was the richest city in Germany. Its wealthy manufacturers engaged progressive architects and artists who often prefigured modernist design - particularly so in the making of women’s stockings, a collection of which resides in the local museum. During a residency there, this collection formed the basis of a photographic series by the artist which juxtaposed the (often derelict) local textile factories with fragments of the stockings produced there between 1895 and 1910. Chemnitz/Karl-Marx-Stadt was in East Germany after WWII and, even after reunification, its pre-1933 history had virtually been forgotten by the broad public. The exhibition of Dunn’s photographs at Kunstsammlungen in Chemnitz (and Berlin, and Mulhouse, France) turned out to be a profoundly enlightening experience for locals, triggering a rediscovery of their city’s history and prompting a reassessment of the city’s cultural relevance (in 2025, Chemnitz will be named a European City of Culture). The present painting springs from this photographic series, and also relates to earlier work by the artist which explored Scottish tartan.
