‘Grahame King’ l.l.; titled on estate labels verso (GK753)

Provenance:

Angela Hey and Joanna Tanaka-King, courtesy Australian Galleries

Literature & references:

Sasha Grishin, et. al., The Art of Grahame King, Macmillan Publishing, Melbourne, 2005, see p 26-32 & 109 for paintings dating from the 1950s to early 60s.

Note:

Before travelling to London in 1947, King had established himself in his home-town of Melbourne as a celebrated George Bell trained modernist painter and had revitalised the Victorian Artist’s Society as secretary and exhibitions manager. In London he lived at The Abbey Art Centre, a property owned by art dealer William Ohly, alongside a number of Australian, British and European artists – including Inge Neufeld who would become King’s life-long partner. On his travels King was, in the words of Sasha Grishin, “exposed to the wide spectrum of postwar European and American modernism”, and returned to Australia in 1951 “a committed abstract expressionist painter and printmaker.” (Grishin, op. cit. p 20 & 23) The decade saw King focused on the building of their Robin Boyd designed family home in Warrandyte and on various mural commissions which, whilst sometimes painted in a more figurative style to fit a brief, were predominantly focussed on the symbolic abstraction (along the lines of the present work) also practiced at the time by artists including Roger Kemp, George Johnson, Leonard Crawford and Leonard French.
