Now: Change, YAVA Gallery & Arts Hub, Healesville, 6 February 2019 - 1 March, 2020

Note:

Csutoros began working with coal during a residency on the outskirts of Beijing in 2007 where the substance was ubiquitous; at the time it was used domestically for heating and cooking and the smoke build up in the atmosphere gave the night sky a pink tinge and the residents respiratory illnesses. She made this particular work, and others in the series, on a residency in 2013 in Songzhuang, an art  village in eastern Beijing popular with Chinese artists, including Ai Wei Wei. It consists of locally found black coal covered in gold leaf. Csutoros talks about coal as being paradoxical: a million-year-old substance from deep within the earth containing ancient sunlight - quite beautiful in itself; it enabled the industrial revolution and all the technological advancements and wealth that we now take for granted – but, she asks, is it sustainable, and at what cost?
