Note:

This work is one of the Werribee and Bacchus Marsh Series. The Little River rises north-west of the You Yangs and flows through the town of Little River and out into Port Phillip Bay near Werribee South. Landscape painters can look up (at hills) or across (over paddocks) or down (at gorges). In Fred William’s Gorge series he does all three, depending on his viewpoint. In some of the paintings he looks laterally across and we get a slab of hillside with no horizon, and in others, such as Little River, his view is diagonally along and across the river to get both aspects. Another innovation (albeit a visually modest one) was the inclusion of the human presence - the electricity pylon in this and other gorge pictures.
Williams differed from the Impressionists who made a clear distinction between sunny and cloudy weather. Although almost always cloudless, his skies are rarely blue - thus suggesting a preference for a slight “haze” which filters out the direct sun and allows an "all-day" reading which, in the process, calls for a broader palette.
1974 saw a move in that direction. Whilst Australia is predominantly a "wide brown land" all sorts of subtle variants can emerge from nowhere depending on where and when one is placed. I'd suggest that Little River would be a fair example of Williams exploring and recording this. The artist painting in the landscape confronts the problem of the changing light changing the painting while the work is still in progress. But focus needs to envisage the result on the gallery wall where such issues will be irrelevant: viewers will (probably subliminally) be searching for something more essential - that something which transcends time and offers an almost tactile vision of the land itself.
