Literature & references:

Although the painting is not dated, stylistically it belongs to the early 1950s, when Passmore was still influenced by Cézanne, and before his paintings evolved into the more abstract work of the late 1950s & 1960s. The strong triangular composition of the three boys variously stretching out, crouching or poised to dive further relates this painting to the recurring image and grouping in Passmore’s bathing pictures of 1951-1953. The best known examples are The Miraculous Draught of Fishes (1952, Art Gallery of New South Wales) and Harbourside (1952, National Gallery of Victoria). (cf: B. Pearce, John Passmore: Retrospective, AGNSW, 1984-1985).
