Catalogue number: 1

oil on card

42.50 x 57.50

unsigned

Provenance:

The artist's nephew (his sister's son)

Exhibited:

Paintings by Adrian Lawlor, Argus Gallery, 8 - 19 Aug 1966, on the reverse of no. 27;
Modern Australian Painting, Charles Nodrum Gallery, Apr 12 - May 5, 2012, no. 25;
Miles Evergood: The Australian Years together with an exhibition of his Australian Contemporaries, Charles Nodrum Gallery, 4 - 27 June, 2015, no. 39

Note:

In 1939, the Black Friday bushfires destroyed the artist’s house in Warrandyte, together with all the paintings still in his studio. This landscape was removed from the back of a painting of the modernist house he re-built after the tragedy - hence the dating to the 1940s.
It is typical of its era in its Cezanne-inspired treatment of the local landscape: as Gavin Fry memorably puts it “Mont Ste Victoire meets Kangaroo Ground. You get that sort of view as you head north of Warrandyte ...” He feels it was probably done in the studio, not plein air.
There is also a relationship with some of Sam Atyeo’s landscapes of the 30s. See, for example, Joseph Brown Gallery, Spring Exhibition 1980, no. 116, for “A park” (also illustrated in Paintings from the Joseph Brown Collection, Christies Australia, May 2005, lot 76).
