Literature & references: see James Mollison, A Singular Vision, OUP, Melbourne, 1989, p 76 for other You Yangs gouaches, and also Patrick McCaughey, Fred Williams, Murdoch Books, 2008, plates 67-71 for related works.
Note: James Mollison remembers driving Fred Williams to the You Yangs in the winter of 1962. the artists concern was to explore, within an Australian context, the experience of looking down from an eminence at the flat surrounding country, which seems to climb up the picture plane. This important gouache, probably painted on site, relates most closely to the etching You Yangs Pond (James Mollison, Fred Wiliams Etchings, Sydney, 1968, no 207). It can also be broadly read as a study for the three major You Yang oils of 1963, illustrated in both the above references.
Our thanks to Lyn Williams for her help in cataloguing this significant work.
