Old State Savings Bank, 1973

Enquire

Catalogue number: 2

silkscreen on paper

45.50 x 175.00

Edition of 15

Provenance: The Artist
Note: The State Savings Bank opened in 1842 as the Port Phillip Savings Bank, and in 1853 became the State Savings Bank of Victoria. In 1858 a head office was opened on the corner of Market Street and Flinders Lane, and in 1912 they moved to new premises - as seen in this work - on the corner of Bourke and Elizabeth Streets. This building was destroyed in the early 1970s, and in 1991 the State Savings Bank merged with the Commonwealth Bank. Arthur Wicks moved to Wagga Wagga from Canberra in the early 70s and made this work from photographs taken on regular trips to Melbourne.
