Note:

Donald Friend is associated with Merioola, a large a rambling mansion in Woollahra. Chika Lowe had taken up the lease in 1941 but it really came into its own after the war: it was home to a group of international orientated visual artists (Friend, Loudon Sainthill, Mitty Lee Brown, Peter Kaiser, Justin O’Brien) as well as dancers, musicians, interior designers – in short, sophisticated tenants.  Friend returned to Australia in 1941 but was called up the same year, going on to serve around Australia and Indonesia. The subject of this sensitive portrait suggests an Indonesian sitter.
