Enquire

etching on paper, 15 x 17.5 cm

15.00 x 17.00

unsigned

Provenance:

The Estate of Edwin Tanner

Literature & references:

Anthony Fitzpatrick, "Edwin Tanner: Mathematical Expressionist", Tarrawarra Museum of Art, 2018, exhibition catalogue, see illus p 59 for ‘In My Father’s House’, 1962

Note:

This etching is probably a precursor to the painting ‘In My Father’s House’. The genesis of the etching may have arisen at a time of family tension when his father – a member of the strictly fundamentalist Plymouth Brethren – had a serious falling out with the order which sadly led to a nervous breakdown.
In order to balance the etching, the top line of faces have a single leg pointing in one direction, while those on the bottom line have a single leg pointing in the opposite direction. The bottom line of symbols have appendages pointing in multiple directions. These faces and symbols were taken up in Tanner’s subsequent paintings
