Morris West, Barry Pearce and Lou Klepac, Frank Hodgkinson, Beagle Press, 1994, see plates 32, for ‘Rubinstein Panel’; 33, for ‘No. 1 April 1958’; and 35 ‘Rubinstein Panel V’, which all relate in handling to the present work, though are much smaller in scale. As per the rules, the artist submitted five paintings to the inaugural Helena Rubinstein Travelling Art Scholarship in 1958 at Art Gallery of New South Wales. He won the prize and the Gallery acquired ‘No. 1 April 1958’ for the collection.
