These late 60s works marked a radical break from the Spanish works of the first half of the decade. The earlier works, with their thickly crusted surfaces and heavily impastoed surfaces in umbers, blacks and fawns exuded a sense of mineral silence; the later works, with their high-keyed palettes and clearly readable subjects drawn directly from the bullring were basically focused on movement. They can be seen as precursors to the equally high-keyed landscapes he produced on his return to Australia in 1970.
