Bushfires, like all natural disasters, can evoke a sense of awe and fear that in turn engenders curiosity. This potent mixture clearly affected Mary Macqueen who visited the south coast of Victoria after the Ash Wednesday bushfires of 1983. The most appropriate medium - charcoal - is literally at hand and this work was possibly made with the actual remains of the trees recently burnt. However, whilst its unusually large scale suggests it may not have been drawn on the spot, its eerie darkness strikes a sombre chord.
