Gordon Morrison, Elizabeth Cross, Ronald Millar and Patrick McCaughey, Michael Shannon - Australian Romantic Realist, Art Gallery of Ballarat, retrospective exhibition catalogue, 2011, see p 64 for Marshalling yards, 1957, and p 90 for Marshalling yard No. 1, 1971
In the 1950s and 60s, when Shannon's painting was focused on the urban landscape, he favoured an eminence from which to look out across rooftops - in this case from Spencer Street over the Marshalling Yards to Port Melbourne. He painted two works of the same title in 1957 and revisited the subject in 1971 when The Age's new multi-storey headquarters gave him more height.
