Tom Alberts, Tom Alberts: Ultramarine Blue, exhibition catalogue, Charles Nodrum Gallery, 2023: "In 2019, we were offered an apartment on Boulevard Saint-Germain in Paris for 12 months...The arrival of the pandemic left us little choice but to stay on. Painting was a great occupation because, on a daily level, nothing much changed for me: whether in lockdown or not, every day I go into a room, close the door, and paint... I've been attending the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Montparnasse in their open life model class and some of the studies I've made are in this exhibition... Portraiture is connected to this discipline of life drawing but is many times more difficult; for me it’s one of the hardest investigations into the visible world. It's the intersection of so many levels on which the self, the subject, society and painting operate. I've made self-portraits for many reasons, such as trying out something in paint or looking at a particular effect of light, sometimes trying to embody a story autobiographical or otherwise. The figure and the portrait are at the heart of my work and where I face the greatest difficulties and the highest rewards."
