Homage to Roy de Maistre, Joseph Brown Gallery, April 21 May 9, 1971, no. 39
Heather Johnson, Roy De Maistre, the English Years 1930-1968, Craftsman House, 1995, see p. 154-55 for a discussion of the final version of the work:
"The initial visual appeal of de Maistre's religious paintings, masks complexity: the pragmatic complexity of depicting traditional subject matter in a new but still recognisable way; the spiritual complexity of depicting a personal faith but one that is also shared by many; the artistic complexity of depicting what is essentially disturbing and horrific (the end of Christ's life) in a visually pleasing manner; and the intellectual complexity of rendering the subject and composition linked to the past, of the present, and also timeless. It was de Maistre's ability to resolve such problems that gave his work an appeal beyond religious circles. His work the Deposition, 1946, (British Council collection ) (Plate 59), was purchased by the British Council in 1950."
Johnson, op cit
The work is a study for the larger Deposition, 1946, 142 x 112 cm, purchased in 1950 for the collection of the British Council in London.
