Helen Campbell with Eric Riddler, Chronology, in Anne Ryan, David Aspden - The Colour of Music and Place, survey exhibition catalogue, Art Gallery of New South Wales, 2011
After his success in Sao Paolo, Aspden visited Mexico, The United States and London on his way to the South of France, before settling for some months near Bath in England, nearby fellow Australian artist John Peart. Exhibitions of work made during this time were held at Rudy Komon Gallery in Sydney in October 1972 and May 1973 and "revealed the transformative effect on his work of a change of environment. In contrast to the bright colours of the Brazil works, colour and tone were now subtly muted, the shapes softened and merging, while floating surface flecks or splashes of colour counterbalanced a tendency to depth." (Campbell & Riddler, op. cit. p 81)
In 1973 Aspden won the Travelodge Art Prize, at the time Australia's richest award, and in 1974 was selected by Patrick McCaughey for the Ten Australians exhibition that toured Europe.
