Aspden won the Wynne Prize for landscape painting in 1995, and in the same year was diagnosed with tuberculosis. He continued to paint and exhibit throughout subsequent treatment for cancer and in in 2002 Orange Regional Gallery held the first major retrospective of his work dating back to the 1970s. He died in Sydney, in June 2005.
